Science Lesson with Technology
Unit Title: Animal Adaptations
Lesson Title: Adapting to Survive
Grade Level: 5th
GLCE's:
Central Question For Lesson: What are the main types of adaptations (behavioral and structural) that animals develop or have in order to survive in their environments?
Objective:
The students will be able to use what they have learned to create their own animal that will have different adaptations that help it survive, therefore learning that animals have structural and behavioral adaptations in order to survive.
Total time for lesson: 45 minutes
Materials Needed:
Ask the students about how they wear coats in the winter and such to stay warm.
PowerPoint about the different types of animal adaptation with picture examples.
The students will sit on the carpeted area and I will use the smart board.
The students will be sitting on the carpet area and will be expected to pay attention to the PowerPoint.
The PowerPoint will be at the appropriate comprehension level of my students.
Transition: Instructions (5 mins)
I will explain the next activity, modeling with my own animal that I created, and then split the class into groups of four and send them back to their seats to begin the Designing an Animal activity.
The students will return to their seats quickly and quietly and be ready to begin the activity.
I will be as clear as possible and explain it simply, along with keeping it up on the PowerPoint for them to reference.
Activity 2: Designing an Animal (20 mins)
Each group of students will be given an environment on a piece of paper and a laptop to use the paint program to create their animal and then type out a explanation about it. As the groups work I will travel around to make sure that they understand. “How is your animal going to stay warm or cool? What is it going to eat? How is it going to get its food and water?
The students will need to be creative and work together to make the animal according to what they have learned about adaptation and be sure to create it in a way that it will survive in the given environment.
I will be available for questions and can help those groups that seem to be struggling with the technology or with their creativity. If they aren’t that great at spelling, the key vocabulary will be posted on a big sheet of paper for them to look at.
Transition: Coming Back (3 min)
I will stop the groups when it seems like they have finished, and have them close up their laptops and then come and sit on the carpet again.
The students will stop what they are doing and clean up and put away any materials they got out.
Those that haven’t finished will be given time to finish later.
Conclusion: Discussion (7 mins)
I will discuss with the students about the adaptations of their animals and have a few groups share their animals on the smartboard. We will also discuss what they thought about the activity and answer any remaining questions. I will pass out the worksheet/ homework and explain it.
The students will ask any questions they still have or make remarks on the activity.
This is where there will be clarification for those who didn’t understand something.
Lesson Title: Adapting to Survive
Grade Level: 5th
GLCE's:
- L.EV.05.11 Explain how behavioral characteristics (adaptation, instinct, learning, habit) of animals help them to survive in their environment. (5th Grade Science GLCE’s)
- L.OL.05.42 Explain how animal systems (digestive, circulatory, respiratory, skeletal, muscular, nervous, excretory, and reproductive) work together to perform selected activities.
