In 2-digit addition if there is more than 9 ones in the ones place then you need to group the 10 ones and move them to the tens place. The 1 being added at the top is the 10 that was made out of ones (the red bar).

In 2-digit subtraction look at the top number and if there is less ones than the bottom number then you need to borrow from the tens place. Move a ten over and turn it into ones. I had 5 tens and 2 ones then I borrowed and have 4 tens and 12 ones. It still equals 52, but now I can subtract.
